New Zealand’s freshly appointed coach Mark Greatbatch’s first move of his tenure was to select 31-year-old unknown Peter Ingram to open the innings against Bangladesh in this one-off Twenty20 international.

It is either going to be a masterstroke or a very short tenure.

To Ingram’s credit, the Central District’s opener is averaging 39.33 in his past seven Twenty20 games and let’s be honest, facing up to a Bangladesh attack is no more formidable then squaring up against his fellow countrymen in first-class cricket.

In fact, it could be argued that it may even be a tad harder taking on his Kiwi counterparts than Bangladesh.

Let’s be honest, Bangladesh has a long way to go before it is even considered a threat internationally.

Their bowling attack is flimsy, at best, at worst, it is more brittle than polycrystalline iridium (trust me, that is brittle).

Shahadat Hossain has gone for close to nine an over in his four T20 internationals so far, Shafiul Islam is yet to make his T20 debut and Nazmul Hossain made his debut mid-2009 against the West Indies failing to impress with 1/15 off two overs.

If you are going to throw these youngsters the ball and ask them to charge in against the Kiwis, there are going to be casualties.

Ingram’s opening partner is none other than the world’s highest scoring T20 international, Brendon McCullum, who in his 30 matches has amassed 813 runs at an average of 31.26 and at a blistering strike rate of 124.31.

The good news for Bangladesh is that McCullum suffers from a common psychological disorder of top ranked players that makes him susceptible against inexperienced bowling attacks.

His overconfidence can get in the way of his talent however the Bangladesh won’t want to bank on him having an off day and will need to restrict his scoring options by pitching the ball full and to change the pace regularly.

Once they get past Ingram and McCullum the tourists must also counter the likes of Ross Taylor, Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori and McCullum’s younger brother Nathan.

Having lost their past nine T20 internationals does not bode well for Bangladesh it must be said, their recent limited overs losses to Sri Lanka and India along with humbling Test series loss to the latter has robbed them of any kind of confidence.

If New Zealand can battle complacency that one expects them to suffer, this match should be a doddle for Vettori’s men and a start to Greatbatch’s international coaching career (you can’t really call a win against Bangladesh a glorious start now can you? It’s like beating up on your six year-old brother when you are 24).

If the lose this, well expect the entire team to be marched down to Waikato River and each given a pair of moulded concrete boots.
