A total of 612 cars have been stolen this year compared to the same period last year. The figures for motorcycles snatched are the same as cars. In the first five month of 2009, a total of 3219 motorcycles were snatched, while in this year figure has been much higher, at 5956, an increase of 2737. Street crime is on the rise in Karachi. Every day a couple of people lose their lives resisting an attempted snatching cars, mobiles and robbery. The streets of Karachi are no longer safe for pedestrians. The majority of street crime consists of mobile theft. This particular type of street crime in Karachi has reached an unprecedented and frightening level. Due to this reason, the sense of insecurity among the city’s 10 million plus citizens has never been more acute. Even a cursory look at the happenings of the last few days in the nation’s biggest city and commercial and industrial hub is enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine. There has been an alarming increase in victims of mobile snatching in the first five months of 2009, which come to 1069 compared to 37695 last year. This means that there were a total of 3374 more incidents of mobile phone snatching this year. It may be pertinent to mention here that despite carrying all the intricacies, the official statistics do not show the number of cellphone-holders having been killed while offering resistance to the phone snatchers.
