Burglars target the Elderly
Crimestoppers have just released a shocking new warning that elderly people are at risk of being subject to distraction burglars.
Distraction Burglary occurs when a criminal gains entry or attempts to gain entry to a property to commit theft by using tricks, falsehood or general distractive techniques. Toronto Crime Stoppers is asking for the assistance of the public to identify persons-of-Interest, and suspects, in relation to a Robbery in the Wilson Avenue/Keele Street area of Toronto. The Robbery took place back on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008. Three suspects wearing disguises entered a financial company and forced their way through a door to gain access to the restricted area. Once inside they ordered the victim to the floor and ransacked the office before fleeing with a quantity of money. One of the best ways on how to break bad news is by putting the message in context. Let’s say you have to tell some people that their house got robbed while they were away on vacation. That’s definitely bad news.
However, if you tell them that they were lucky to have not been there at all since the thieves were known to be ruthless, then they’ll have a more positive perspective on the situation.
Step 3: Lessen The Emotional Intensity.
As much as possible, learn how to break bad news in a way that lessens its negative emotional intensity. That means no crying fits or no hiccupping. Try not to show any sign of sorrow or pain in your face that the recipient might pick up on, as this could aggravate the situation.
Step 4: Allow Them To React.
Knowing how to break bad news means allowing them to react. Don’t react for them or before them. Instead, base your reactions on what they do next. If the person you’re talking to cries, then comfort them. If the person is angry, try to calm them down a little.
Now that you know how to break bad news, it might still feel unpleasant when you do it, and you might sometimes even be dragged into the mess. But you can at least rest easy knowing that in some way, you help lighten the other person’s load.

The Progressive Muslim Union calls for the immediate release of James Loney, Tom Fox, Harmeet Sooden, and Norman Kember, members of the Christian PeaceMakers Team in Iraq. Kidnapping, and the murder of kidnap victims as we have seen for previous instances, are crimes — crimes against the individual, crimes against humanity, crimes against Islam.
In this case, the crime is particularly heinous because the four men were in Iraq to help the Iraqi people. They do not work for the American government, and are not part of the military. CPT has a longstanding record of opposing the invasion of Iraq and of helping oppressed populations. CPT first came to Iraq in 2002 to oppose the war, and they were among the first to document the abuses at Abu Ghraib and call them to the attention of the public.
While we recognize the right of the Iraqi people to resist continued American military presence in their country, we also expect them to adhere to the Geneva Conventions governing warfare and prisoners of war. Kidnapping civilians and/or their murder are never acceptable tactics, even in times of war.
The PMU also extends its condolences to the friends and family of Ronald Schulz, who has reportedly been executed by those who were holding him. May his soul rest in peace.
