How to Prevent Robbery and Burglary

2月 27, 2009 · Posted in Burglary · Comment

The death of 63 years old Gurmail Singh, who was attacked in his convenience store on Saturday 20/02/2010 in the village of Cowcliffe, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire is a tragic reminder of the deadly consequences of the crime of robbery.

According to the British Retail Consortium 2009 Retail Crime Survey, robberies doubled in 2009 to about 4 % of retail crime, whilst burglary accounted for up to 9 %. A robbery of an average store in 2009 resulted in an estimated £2,077 loss. This figure excludes damage to the property and other consequences suffer by the store owner.

Robbery occurs at least three times a year on a modest high street.

However, the frequency of these incidents might not be as relevant as the human cost. An employee caught in an incident of robbery could be scared both emotionally and physically for life. By implementing a range of basic preventive measures retailers can make their stores less attractive to any would-be robber or burglar.

How Exposed is Your Organisation?

There are a number of factors to take into consideration when assessing how exposed your business is to a potential robbery:

Store Location

Urban vs. Rural

Stand alone vs. Located in Retail Park or shopping centre

Opening Hours

24/7 vs. selected hours;

Customer traffic level at off-peak hours

Cash Handling Procedures

Private security vs. employee deposit

Use of drop safes

Frequency of deposit

Deposit policies.

Store Visibility

Bright lighting inside the store

Bright outside lighting

Front-end till visible to outside traffic vs. blocked view

Access to Major Motorway

Close to major motorway vs. residential, near a city

Visibility of Local Police Force:

Past history of crime in the area

Known problems with car parks

Physical assaults

Auto theft

Gang or drug related activities.

How to Minimise or Prevent Robbery

The following are a few measures that when implemented will reduce the possibilities of robbery or burglary at any retail store:

1. The Use of CCTV Cameras

Thieves do not like being caught, and a CCTV Cameras in a retail store increases the possibility of them being identified and caught. Therefore, the installation of CCTV can serve as a deterrent. But as with any technology to be effective they need to be operated professionally or they could end up producing the opposite effects.

2. Remove Any Visibility Obstructions

Blinds or tinted windows that can easily conceal a robbery or burglary activities within a retail store are not advisable. Retailers need to ensure that those items that could serve as a barrier and inadvertently aid the crime are not placed in their stores.

3. Reduce Cash and Remove the Incentive

Robberies and burglaries are mainly planned in advance. In many instances the culprits conduct a few days of recon on the area they want to strike checking out the reward and the security measures. Therefore to reduce incentive for an incident of robbery or burglary in a retail environment, retailers need to take the following measures:

Shop floor cash pick-up activities need to be conducted discreetly so as not to attract excessive public attention. All cash should be transported from the shop floor to the cash office using cash drop boxes.
Impose cash floor limits on cash registers as well as cash office. Regular collections must be rotated to ensure they remain random.

4. Always Make Eye Contact

Employees need to be taught to make eye contact with customers as this might make anyone with sinister motives uncomfortable and fearing they might have been noticed will abort their plans.

5. Wait for Loss Prevention Personnel

Before transporting cash from the till to the cash room, ensure a loss prevention officer is present, if not two members of staff need to be present. An opportunistic thief will not strike when they observe the presence of a loss prevention officer or two members of staff.

6. Always Secure Drawers

Ensure till, cash-office cash drawers, safes, and doors are secured at all times. Only authorised personnel should have access to the cash room. No visitor including vendor should be given access to the cash room.

7. Procedure For Making Bank Deposit

Wherever possible, cash meant for banking needs to be picked up by a professional security company. However, if that is not possible and it has to be taken to the bank by employees ensure it takes place only in broad daylight and it is completed by a minimum of two employees preferably a manager.

How to Minimise or Prevent Burglary

Most burglaries are a crime of opportunity carried out by desperate individuals.
Organised burglary rings mostly target places if they have information or reason to believe that there are items of value kept there.

The payoff for committing burglary at a retail store is unattractive for professionals therefore preventing burglary will require the implementation of the following basic security measures:

A basic alarm system with movement sensors that covers the entrances, windows, skylights, ceilings and any other high risk area will more or less be enough to protect a store.
If a burglar enters a store and the alarm goes off, he will try to grab as much as he can and flee as he does not want to be caught therefore does not waste time searching for valuables.
It is essential that the alarm is monitored so that when it is triggered it is responded to and investigated.
If there was a breach of security, it is essential that the cause is identified and rectified.

The two essential points that needs to be seriously considered in this article are:

Robbery and burglary are crimes of opportunity, remove the opportunity and you reduce the possibility.

The human costs can be devastating for those caught up in an incident of robbery therefore it is imperative that retail organisations do everything within their power to ensure that their stores are difficult to rob or burgle.

Crime Pays

Crime Pays….

What is Criminal Law?
Criminal Law is the name given to the branch of law that governs an individual’s relationship to the state. It includes the definitions of criminal offenses, which are usually established by Congress or state legislatures.
The term “criminal law” also encompasses the rights of an accused and the criminal process, including arrest, arraignment, grand juries, pleas, discovery, pretrial hearings, trials, jury selection, evidence, motions, and post-trial remedies.
The main purpose of the criminal law is to set forth the punishment for criminal offenses. In order to prove any crime, no matter how serious, the prosecutor must prove that the accused committed a guilty act with a guilty mind beyond a reasonable doubt.

Money matters

The most you can get from a client is what he can afford to pay you.
If you are tapped into a network of clients making serious money committing crimes you can make a lot of money in criminal law.
However, there is not big money in criminal work for most attorneys because most people arrested for crimes don’t have the disposable income to pay attorneys.
A simple rule of thumb in criminal law is to get paid up front before you enter your appearance in the case.

Crime areas that can pay off
Cases involving money for a criminal lawyer would be:

•    DUI (Driving under inference)
•    Illegal substances
•    Corruption
•    Cyber Crime
•    Corporate criminality and fraud
•    money laundering
•    environmental issues
•    economic and extortion

The most lucrative cases were drug cases where the client can afford to pay big money, where the stakes are high and the client can afford high fees.
This leads to cases with clients either of corporate type or wealthy individuals.

Attention – You need Attention!

You need to attract attention to your person and capabilities to solve these types of cases. Therefore you need cases that are high profile in media. This of course will come on expense of your private life.
You will no longer be able to live a “private” life as your demand for high profile cases which will have the potential to generate cash, will demand your exposure to media in most cases controversial areas.
You will attract both positive and negative attention given this fact. Therefore you will need to think on how to maintain the personal sphere and security.

Marketing is an important strategy to get paid

Set up your online community about Crime law in your district, region or even country. This will become a resource read by many readers, both interested in Crime Law, but also people seeking advice within this area.
You can also combine this community with  a short bi-weekly Crime Law Newsletter where you actively talk about recent cases you or your colleges have been working with.
It also can cover law aspects within Crime, and what is worth knowing.
Get your name in famous Crime law blogs around the internet. These websites like allexperts.com and ezine.com are possible options in this case.
Utilizing the social network on the web is also needed in order to get your name known in this area of law. Use of Facebook, linkedin.com and ecademy.com would be advantageous.

Virtuality is Reality

As i mentioned that cyber crimes could be a lucrative area of law, we see that real life criminal law is applicable on virtual activities when those activities break through the expectations participants and developers are legitimately allowed to have.
Even though criminal law can be applied to virtual criminal behavior, the question remains whether it is expedient to use criminal law and to prosecute virtual world participants.
The answer to this question can, without empirical data, only be a political one and is therefore left open in the end.

Criminal and Civil Law

The area of criminal law is ever-expanding and increasingly making inroads into previously civil law matters. This complicate some cases and needs understanding of both areas in order to give the client an optimal service and results.
Therefore your knowledge and depth into both areas should be expected by the client.

Networking

When it comes to the basics, you need to have a network of people with some influence within the area you practice, there is no way around this. Regardless of how clean or corrupt the system you are working within, knowledge of the players in the field is helpful and needed.
You might ask why, and the answer is simple – you gain trust through knowledge, when you have trust you will have respect, and finally having the respect – people will listen to your arguments and your cases will get the attention needed to get the high profile cases you need.

And finally

You must be a master of procedural code, to demonstrate unbelievable word and procedural juggling
Judges and Jury’s pay attention to the way you present the case, what cases you led before, the outcome and publicity of the proceedings

National news in Indian TV channels

2月 24, 2009 · Posted in National News · Comment

Indian news has suddenly become the hot cake in the world panorama. It is competing for attention with news from other regions of the world. Popular Indian national news is telecast from different TV channels. All the major TV channels have included at least one national news channel in its pocket. Launching a satellite channel is a big headache and news gathering is a tough task. In spite of all these hassle the all the electronic channels in India struggle hard to gather all the important Indian news be it national or local. These news channels have changed the concept of Indian news. They have changed the format of National news. By 1990’s Doordarshan had monopoly over Indian national news. But now the private channels have taken over Doordarshan. In India these private channels make wide coverage of Indian news.

The main feature of all the Today’s national news bulletins is their high quality visuals, god editing, topicality and objectivity also. Thus Indian news has travelled a long way right from DD age to that of Times Now and NDTV. From local to national all Indian news is brought under the purview of these channels. In fact television in India has undergone significant changes in present era of globalization. To understand the metamorphosis, one needs to have a look of the path covered by the channels so far. It was in 1959 that Akashwani Bhavan in New Delhi was chosen for one hour news program on health, education, citizen’s right and traffic sense. It was in 1972 that DD channel was launched. The aim of this channel was promoting the national integration. Indian viewers enjoyed the colored version of the Asian Games and with this new trend in Indian news; the news started spreading in every nook and corner of India.

Indian government left no stone unturned to expand the National news broadcasting geographically and demographically. In 1983 only 29 percent of the Indian population had an access to the television channel. It got doubled in 1985. By the end of 1990 national news could reach at leach 90 percent of the Indian population. In 1984 DD Metro was launched. Its main purpose was to telecast entertaining programs to the urban viewers. It was confined to metropolitan cities only. In 1988 The NDTV launched a program called world this week. It was a national news based program but it tried to cover international news to a great extent. It was telecast on every Friday. It had a very big commercial success. It changed the panorama of Indian news.

After 1990 satellite television in India become transnational. CNN introduced international satellite television in India in 1991. After that Z became the first private Hindi news channel of India catering to viewers for Indian or national news. In 1995 NDTV became the first private producer of Indian news called News Tonight. It was followed by Aaj Tak on DD metro. At present news channels are mushrooming like anything. They cover all types of national news and there is a fierce competition among these channels to get top TRP rank. Every year a new news channel comes up with a different hue and tries to cater to the Indian viewers with small or big national news.

Digital Photo and Images in the Professional Practice

2月 24, 2009 · Posted in Crime Scene Photos · Comment

Image scaling is referred to as the process involved in altering the size of a digital photo or image. Altering the size can be done by down sizing or making the image smaller or enlarging it. Retaining the sharpness of a digital photo while being enlarged or downsized from its original size is the ultimate goal of every photo enthusiast. This is possible with the use of online or standard digital photo enlargement tools. Many interpolation algorithms available online or from downloadable software make it possible. But it should be always noted that the size and texture of the original photograph can affect the quality of the enlarged output image.

In digital photo enlargement, the size of a photo or image is increased and pixels normally become more visible in doing so. Most often, some of the details in the photo or the image are lost in the process, i.e. image or photo becomes blurred. However, there are many picture enlargers that can even out the appearance of the pixels from the original, thus retaining important details in the photo or image.

There are many methods of scaling like the nearest neighbor interpolation, bilinear interpolation and bicubic interpolation. The later is most preferred because it retains the sharpness and most of the details of the photo or image. Another good picture enlargement approach is found in some computer graphic software, called super sampling. This is also an advanced photo enlargement method that is best used when magnifying images or photos with low resolutions.

Why is it very important to pay attention to the details when enlarging or magnifying an image or photo? Photos and images taken from any digital camera have various purposes. Aside from personal purposes, digital photos especially are being used today by many professional practitioners. For instance, in the medical field, digital photos and images are used to present case studies and enhance reports. In dermatology for instance, digital shots of before and after acne photos may be used to explain a patients progress.

In aeronautics, there are already a number of attempts to discover life and other information in other planets, the moon and even the sun. Digital photos serve as evidence of these space expeditions. In forensics, though special UV or IR digital cameras are to be used, digital photos are also important not only to present evidence from the scene of the crime but also discover additional details of what transpired. These are some of the many professionals that benefit from digital photo enlargement.

Going back to the question earlier, why is it important to pay attention to details when enlarging or magnifying an image or photo? In relation to professional use, details are essential and very vital, especially in forensics as these may be used in litigation. Therefore, a major consideration when selecting a photography enlarger method or photographic enlarger service is that it should retain sharpness and valuable details while scaling the photograph. There are many software and even online providers that can do this service efficiently. Especially in large scale investigative projects, where sometimes the camera used is not set to its maximum or is not really a professional camera, it is very essential that digital photo enlargement capabilities of your software or the provider can handle photos with sub-quality.

Crime and Punishment Review – A Concise Book Review and Summary

2月 21, 2009 · Posted in Crime · Comment

A novel unique during its time, and unique to this day, Crime and Punishment is a highly psychological book that follows a young murderer, Raskolnikov, and chronicles with extreme detail the stream of thought of this character before, during and after the crime. Although still a gripping moment of the book, the crime itself is not what is important in Crime and Punishment; it is the consequent psychological implications upon oneself that fills most of the book. The inner turmoil suffered by Raskolnikov is reflected in an almost Shakesperian pathetic fallacy: the chaos and sheer noise of the setting of this book – St. Petersburg – reflects Raskolnikovs ‘split’ in his mind.

Dostoevsky takes the opportunity to critique all the prevalent philosophy’s of his day, using the character of Raskolnikov to demonstrate how destructive and immoral some ideology’s can be. Also dealt with is the conflict between a persons own individual wants and having to concede a certain level of freedom in order to coexist with other individuals, as a world where every person did exactly what they pleased would be chaotic and unsustainable. A sharp, challenging novel (with regards to the questions it raises), Crime and Punishment will demand you review your current beliefs. When considering the depth of this novel, it is quite unbelievable that Dostoevsky wrote it hurriedly in order to pay of debts; the level of complexity is unbecoming of a book written at such haste.

“Go at once, this very minute, stand at the cross-roads, bow down, first kiss the earth which you have defiled, and then bow down to all the world and say to all men aloud, ‘I am a murderer!’ Then God will send you life again.”

It also deals with an idea that perhaps everyone has encountered in some form: if you could kill one rich, selfish old woman and use her money to benefit other people, do you have the right to do it? Or in more abstract terms, does anyone have the right to take from or harm another person for the greater good? Raskolnikov believes there are certain ‘extraordinary’ people who have the right to transgress societal law in order to bring about a greater change; he uses Napoleon and Moses as an example. What Moses did (freeing his enslaved people) was in fact against the laws of his time, but it is clear what he did was for the greater good. And this is but one of numerous profound ideas discussed throughout this astoundingly deep book; this is recommended for adults of all ages and tastes.

“Crime? What crime?” he cried in sudden fury. “That I killed a vile noxious insect, an old pawnbroker woman, of use to no one!… Killing her was atonement for forty sins. She was sucking the life out of poor people. Was that a crime?”.
